Filmmaker Karan Johar has opened up about his friendship with superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and how they never discuss money while working together. In a recent interview, Karan said that Shah Rukh has done cameo appearances in his films like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Brahmastra for free, and that he only gifts him clothes as a token of appreciation.
Karan said that their contracts are based on gratitude and not on monetary terms. He said, “Our contracts with Shah Rukh Khan read: ‘It was a pleasure working with you. Thank you so much!’ That’s the contract. There is no contract!”
When SRK told Karan, I’ll take the bullet for you
Karan also shared how he and Shah Rukh have been there for each other through thick and thin, and how they have seen each other’s growth in the industry. He recalled how Shah Rukh came to his rescue when he was threatened by an underworld don at the premiere of his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He said, “I’ll never forget how Shah Rukh brought me out. He said, ‘I’ll take the bullet for you, you just stand here’.”
Shah Rukh never charges Karan Johar a penny, there’s no contract
Karan was asked how much Shah Rukh charges as a lead or even when he appears in a special appearance. Karan Johar revealed that he doesn’t charge a penny. He said, “(He neither charged for) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) nor for Brahmastra (2022), for which he shot for 14 days! But that is our relationship.”
Karan Johar, however, treats him with clothes. KJo stated, “I give him clothes. I don’t think he has ever asked me for money, even for a film that he has done [as lead]. Whatever is given, is given. Our contracts with Shah Rukh read: ‘It was a pleasure working with you. Thank you so much!’ That’s the contract. There is no contract!”
When Karan Johar stepped in to direct Shah Rukh’s Ra.One
Karan Johar also revealed how he stepped in to direct a portion of Shah Rukh’s film Ra.One when the team was doing double shifts, and how it was no big deal in their relationship. He continues, “I remember when he was shooting Ra.One, he had a double unit. He called me to shoot for 6 days because Anubhav (Sinha) was doing big action and he needed just simple patch kind of scenes. I flew from Bombay and did it. These are not big deals in our relationships.”
