Karan Johar is taking some important steps to expand Dharma Productions. In late 2024, he announced a major partnership with Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of the Serum Institute of India.
Poonawalla purchased a 50% stake in Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment for Rs 1000 crores, which made headlines last year. However, Johar is now focusing on another move.
Karan Johar Ventures Into Film Distribution
Johar plans to enter the film distribution business, which marks a new chapter for Dharma Productions.
A source close to the project told Bollywood Hungama, “Until now, Dharma Productions had only produced films while a studio or major distributor would release these films in cinemas. But now, Karan wants Dharma to be a complete studio, handling both production and distribution.”
Bhumika Tewari (who previously headed distribution at Zee Studios) has joined Dharma Productions to lead its new distribution efforts. Tewari, who has worked on films like Good Newwz (2019) and Kesari (2019), brings extensive experience to the role and will oversee the release of Dharma’s films across cinemas.
Filmmaker Following The Footsteps Of YRF
Johar’s move to enter the distribution business has drawn comparisons to Yash Raj Films (YRF), which produces and distributes its films.
An industry insider commented, “Karan Johar is following in the footsteps of Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra’s YRF. This has been on his mind for many years, and with Adar Poonawalla’s backing, he is now ready to make it a reality.”
There’s also speculation that, like YRF, Dharma Productions could distribute films from other production companies in the future, although it’s unclear when this will happen or if the distribution efforts will extend internationally.
Karan Kohar Recently Praised The Sky Force Trailer
Recently, Johar took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the trailer for Sky Force. He praised it & highlighted its “scale, patriotism, and huge emotional impact.”
Talking about his work front, Johar’s 2025 schedule is filling up. He is set to begin the year with Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. After that, he will work on an untitled period legal drama featuring Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananya Panday. He is also producing a rom-com starring Kartik Aaryan.
