Kareena Kapoor Khan and Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra has crossed a key pre-release hurdle with a largely untouched censor clearance. The investigative thriller has been passed by the Central Board of Film Certification with an Adults Only rating, and notably, the board has not asked for any visual cuts despite the film’s intense subject matter.
Only One Dialogue Change In Daayra
The only modification sought by the Examining Committee was in a dialogue spoken by Kareena Kapoor Khan’s character Aajuni close to the two-hour mark. That line was asked to be suitably modified, with one word replaced by “Minister”. Beyond that, the film’s visuals have remained intact, which is significant for a thriller expected to lean heavily on violence, emotional intensity and hard-hitting exchanges.
The censor certificate records Daayra at 143.16 minutes, translating to 2 hours, 23 minutes and 16 seconds. The film was cleared on September 11, 2026, ahead of its theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
Meghna Gulzar Directs Kareena Kapoor Khan And Prithviraj Sukumaran
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Daayra stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead. IMDb lists the film as a 2026 Hindi release backed by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios, with Kanwaljeet Singh also among the credited cast. The film has been positioned as an investigative thriller, a genre that fits Gulzar’s reputation for grounded, tension-driven storytelling.
The clean visual clearance is especially striking because films in this space often face trims when violence or politically loaded dialogue comes under scrutiny. In Daayra’s case, the board appears to have limited its intervention to a single verbal adjustment, allowing the broader dramatic texture of the film to remain undisturbed.
Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Daayra is another sharp turn in Kareena Kapoor Khan’s recent screen run, which has seen her move between mainstream spectacle and darker, more intimate stories. Her most recent releases include the Netflix mystery Jaane Jaan in 2023, Hansal Mehta’s The Buckingham Murders, which had its theatrical release on September 13, 2024, and Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, also released in 2024. Her last theatrical hit film was Crew.
That mix has underlined a particularly interesting phase in her career. Jaane Jaan gave her a streaming-led dramatic pivot, The Buckingham Murders placed her at the centre of a brooding investigative drama, and Singham Again brought her back into a large-scale commercial franchise. With Daayra now set for release on September 18, 2026, she returns once again to a darker, performance-forward space, this time under Meghna Gulzar’s direction alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran.
