The Buckingham Murders, a thriller starring and co-produced by Bollywood superstar Kareena Kapoor Khan, will have its world premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival in October 2023. The film, directed by Hansal Mehta, follows Jass, a detective-mother who investigates the murder of a 10-year-old child in a small town in England.
A groundbreaking collaboration between India and UK
The Buckingham Murders is the first feature film co-produced by Kapoor Khan’s banner Bebo Films and Balaji Telefilms, one of India’s leading production houses. The film also marks the first collaboration between Mehta, a critically acclaimed filmmaker known for his realistic and socially relevant cinema, and Kapoor Khan, one of the most popular and versatile actresses in Hindi cinema.
The film boasts of an international cast and crew, including British actors Keith Allen, Chris Wilson, Lee Nicholas Harris and Rukku Nahar, as well as Indian actors Ranveer Brar, Haqi Ali, Ash Tandon and Ruchika Jain. The film was shot entirely on location in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, with the support of the local community and authorities.
A gripping story of secrets and lies
The Buckingham Murders is based on the novel of the same name by Kashyap Kapoor, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Aseem Arrora and Raghav Raj Kakker. The film follows Jass (Kapoor Khan), a detective-mother who is engulfed in grief when she loses her eight-year-old child in a mob attack. Struggling to come to terms with the loss, she shifts to High Wycombe, and is soon tasked with the investigation of a 10-year-old child’s murder case.
As Jass delves deeper into the case, she uncovers a web of secrets and lies that involve almost everyone in the town, from the local Imam (Ali) to the wealthy businessman (Allen) to the troubled teenager (Nahar). Jass must confront her own demons as well as the dark side of human nature as she tries to solve the mystery and find justice for the victim.
A showcase of immersive art and extended realities
The Buckingham Murders will be screened as part of LFF Expanded, the festival’s programme of immersive art and extended realities. LFF Expanded will feature 14 immersive projects from around the world, including three world premieres, presented across multiple London venues. The programme will run from 4 to 22 October 2023.
The Buckingham Murders will be screened at Bargehouse at Oxo Tower Wharf, a new main venue for LFF Expanded. The film will use state-of-the-art holographic filmmaking techniques to create a mind-bending ride through the human psyche. The film will also be available for online viewing through the festival’s digital platform.
The BFI London Film Festival is one of the world’s leading film festivals, celebrating the best in world cinema across various genres and formats. The festival will run from 4 to 15 October 2023 at venues in London and around the UK.
