Just when Captain India seemed headed for the shelf, the film has re-entered active play. Kartik Aaryan’s long-delayed aviation drama, first announced in 2021 and then lost in a prolonged silence, is now moving again, with production being lined up for summer 2026 after the actor wraps Anurag Basu’s musical co-starring Sreeleela.
That development gives fresh momentum to a project many had stopped counting on. It also sharpens Kartik’s crowded slate at a time when he is balancing star-driven commercial cinema with filmmakers who demand a different creative pitch. His immediate focus remains Basu’s musical, whose shoot resumed in Srinagar after earlier schedules were completed.

Shimit Amin Reignites A Long-Delayed Aviation Drama
The latest confirmed development is that Captain India is expected to go on floors between May and July 2026. The film was originally announced with Hansal Mehta attached as director, but that version no longer stands. It is now being helmed by Shimit Amin, the filmmaker behind Chak De! India, ending the uncertainty that had built up around the project’s creative leadership during its long delay.
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the production timeline is now being locked around Kartik’s current commitment. A source close to the development said, “The makers are eyeing the window between May and July for filming.” The same source added, “The delays caused these rumours. But the film is on track and Shimit is helming it. Kartik is shooting for another T-Series film, after which he will start this.”
For a project that vanished from the conversation for so long, that clarity matters. Captain India was launched as a rescue thriller with Kartik playing a pilot, placing him at the centre of a survival-driven story mounted on a larger scale than his more familiar romantic and comic outings.
Why Captain India Still Stands Out
The film’s return is especially notable because it now carries Shimit Amin’s directorial signature. His work has often fused emotional weight with accessible mainstream storytelling, which gives Captain India a more grounded creative identity than a standard high-concept announcement.
That also fits neatly into Kartik’s recent career phase. He has been alternating between broad commercial appeal and projects that push him into less expected territory, and Captain India seems to sit right at that intersection.
Kartik Aaryan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Kartik was last seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 in 2024, which emerged as one of his biggest commercial successes and further cemented the popularity of his Rooh Baba character. In the same year, he also led Kabir Khan’s Chandu Champion, playing Murlikant Petkar in a physically demanding biographical drama that marked a notable move away from his comfort-zone comic image.
On the OTT front, Freddy premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in 2022 and remains one of his more striking departures, casting him in a darker, more unsettling role. Before Captain India begins, his next confirmed project remains Anurag Basu’s untitled musical with Sreeleela, which is still awaiting an official title announcement.
