The story behind Vijay’s final stretch in cinema has just gained a fascinating new chapter. While Jana Nayagan remains positioned as the superstar’s last film before his full-time political journey, RJ Balaji has revealed that Karuppu, now headlined by Suriya, was once planned as the project that could have marked Vijay’s farewell from the big screen.
The detail adds a rich layer to Karuppu, which released on May 15, 2026, and has since become one of the most-discussed Tamil releases of the year. For fans following Vijay’s move from cinema to politics, Balaji’s revelation is more than trivia. It shows how seriously the actor weighed the creative and symbolic value of his final film.
Rj Balaji On Taking Karuppu To Vijay First
Speaking in a recent interview, RJ Balaji said, “This was supposed to be his last film, so we had two or three meetings which went on for some time, discussing things like him entering politics and taking a call as to which film to make as his last film.”
The filmmaker said he accepted Vijay’s eventual decision to move away from the project. “I felt his reasons were justified. I said, ‘Sir, I absolutely respect your decision, thank you so much,’ because by that time I had narrated two films to him when he asked me if I had something. I thought this was a big respect he gave for my work and my creativity,” he said.
Balaji also credited Vijay with strengthening the screenplay before the film reached Suriya. “The entire thing happened because he asked me the right questions after my narration, questions that made my film and my script better.”
What Karuppu Is About
Karuppu is a Tamil fantasy action drama directed by RJ Balaji, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rathna Kumar, Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, T. S. Gopi Krishnan and Karan Aravind Kumar. The film follows a guardian deity who takes the form of a lawyer to fight corruption in a legal system that exploits the powerless. Its mix of courtroom conflict, folk mythology and mass action gave Suriya a spiritually charged commercial canvas.
