Khal Nayak Sequel Gets a Green Light: Subhash Ghai Locks Script, Sanjay Dutt & Madhuri Dixit Set for Special Roles?
The 90s are officially back, and how! Director Subhash Ghai confirmed the sequel to his 1993 blockbuster Khal Nayak, and it’s “locked”, as he recounted in a recent interview.
“Yes, the script is complete” – Subhash Ghai on Khal Nayak 2
During a recent exclusive interview, Ghai said:
“Yes, the script is complete now and the rest of the cast and technicians will soon be finalised.”
From the loud narrative, innocent performances and — let’s be honest — that song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai, Khal Nayak, which starred Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff, did sensational business.
Although the sequel is expected to focus on a fresh cast and new characters altogether, Ghai has not completely ruled out having some of the original stars — Madhuri and Sanjay Dutt — in “special roles”, giving some heritage value to the modern iteration of the film.
What We Know About Khal Nayak 2 So Far
According to a report, the sequel will be a modern-day crime drama, with thematic links to the original. Unlike many direct sequels, the sequel will be focused on largely new actors and marks a reimagining of Khal Nayak for Gen-Z audiences.
A source said,
“Subhash ji and his team are extremely enthused with the project. The new story is all new characters, but the original edge of the storytelling, and the layers of the characters will remain.”
This is not simply nostalgia — it is nostalgia with a new lens.
Where Are The Original Stars Now?
Madhuri Dixit
Madhuri was last seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and is reportedly in talks with Netflix comedy Ma Behen with Triptii Dimri and Ravi Kishan. If she does take the Khal Nayak 2 role, it will be her first return to gritty drama in many years.
Sanjay Dutt
The original Ballu Balram, Sanjay Dutt, has a busy slate ahead. He will be seen in Housefull 5 directed by Tarun Mansukhani and Baaghi 4 with Tiger Shroff. Dutt’s possible return as Ballu, even in a cameo, is already running the fan theories wild.
A Cultural Touchstone: Why Khal Nayak Still Matters
Khal Nayak shook Indian cinema in 1993 with its morally ambiguous protagonist and nuanced storytelling. It wasn’t simply a film — it was a moment.
- Sanjay Dutt’s portrayal of Ballu was revolutionary.
- Madhuri’s Ganga provided the emotional fulcrum.
- Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music and songs such as Choli Ke Peeche still incite conversations today — after 30 years.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Khal Nayak 2 is more than a sequel. It is a cinematic resurrection of one of Bollywood’s most avant-garde films.
Under the direction of Subhash Ghai and with a new cast of actors in the leads — with possible cameos from the original cast, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit — the hype is real, and rightly so!
All eyes are now on the cast reveal.
And one question remains… Will Ballu rise again?
