L2 Empuraan Director Prithviraj Sukumaran Served IT Notice After ED Raids; Asked To Clarify Pay And Deals Linked To 2022 Film Releases

Prithviraj Sukumaran lands in controversy as he receives an IT notice seeking clarity on his 2022 film payments amid ongoing ED heat on Empuraan producer.

Amid the success of L2 Empuraan, Prithviraj Sukumaran is in the middle of a financial storm. The actor-director has received a notice from the Income Tax Department seeking clarification on his earnings from films released back in 2022.

The notice doesn’t relate to Empuraan, but it arrives just two days after the film’s theatrical release on March 27. Sources reveal that officials have asked Prithviraj to respond before April 29. It’s a follow-up to earlier IT investigations from 2022.

Prithviraj Sukumaran Asked To Clarify The Film Remuneration Of His 2022 Releases

According to reports, the notice specifically mentions three films – Jana Gana Mana, Kaduva, and Gold. Prithviraj acted in and co-produced all three. Officials want clarity on accounting discrepancies related to his remuneration and financial transactions during that time.

Interestingly, Empuraan co-producer Gokulam Gopalan is also under the scanner. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently raided his offices and homes in Kozhikode and Chennai. While the ED insists these actions aren’t linked to Empuraan, the timing has raised eyebrows.

Prithviraj’s mother, veteran actress Mallika Sukumaran, confirmed the IT notice and said, “He has done nothing wrong and will respond appropriately.”

Meanwhile, Empuraan has been facing heat from some political corners. The film, which is a sequel to the blockbuster Lucifer, has drawn criticism from RSS-backed publications. Still, that hasn’t stopped it from drawing global praise and box office wins.

Empurean Director Hasn’t Reacted To The Matter Yet

Despite the growing buzz around both his film and the legal notice, Prithviraj has stayed silent. He’s known for being low-key during controversies, and this time is no different.

The 42-year-old star comes from a well-known film family. He’s the son of the late Malayalam actor Sukumaran. Prithviraj made his debut in 2002 with Nandanam while still studying in Australia. Since then, he’s won state awards and built a reputation as one of Malayalam cinema’s most bankable stars.

In 2019, his directorial debut Lucifer became a major hit and laid the foundation for the Empuraan series.
