Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Madhubala Biopic Casting Not Locked, Mukesh Chhabra Clarifies Amid Aneet Padda And Sai Pallavi Chatter

Just when the internet seemed convinced it had cracked the casting of the Madhubala biopic, the man tasked with putting faces to the film stepped in with a blunt reality check. The biographical drama being backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been surrounded by a rotating list of “finalised” names, but Mukesh Chhabra has now made it clear that the conversation online is running ahead of the actual process.

The project, which has been in the news for months, has repeatedly sparked curiosity because portraying Madhubala is not just a coveted opportunity, it is a role that comes with immense cultural memory and scrutiny. With each fresh rumour, the supposed shortlist has kept changing, until Chhabra decided to address it head on.

Mukesh Chhabra Says The Casting Process Has Not Even Started

On X, Mukesh Chhabra reacted to the constant reports claiming the lead actress had been locked. In a now deleted tweet, the casting director wrote, “Oh wow, so Madhubala casting is already locked? Amazing. Meanwhile, I keep reading a new ‘final’ name every day… so I guess I must be casting for the wrong Madhubala biopic, because we haven’t even started yet. #MadhubalaBiopic.”

That statement effectively puts a full stop to the recent chatter that Saiyaara actor Aneet Padda had been finalised, and the parallel buzz that Sai Pallavi was in serious contention. With Chhabra confirming that casting has not begun, no actor can be treated as officially attached to the lead role at this point.

What Is Known About The Madhubala Biopic So Far

The Madhubala biopic remains in development and is being produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. As per the information circulating with the film’s early packaging, Darlings director Jasmeet K. Reen has been linked to the project as the filmmaker expected to direct.

Beyond that, the makers have not issued an official announcement regarding cast or timelines. Given the scale of the subject and the expectations around Madhubala’s legacy, Chhabra’s clarification suggests the team is still at the very beginning of locking key creative choices.

Sai Pallavi’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Sai Pallavi has stayed in demand across industries, with her recent filmography including Telugu release Amaran (2024) and Tamil film Gargi (2022), both of which strengthened her reputation for performance driven roles. She also starred in Virata Parvam (2022) in Telugu.

On the upcoming front, Sai Pallavi is set to play Sita in Nitesh Tiwari’s two part epic Ramayana, co starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, a major theatrical project that has kept her firmly in the spotlight even as casting rumours swirl around other films.
