On March 13, 2026, the filmmaker unveiled the teaser for his next theatrical film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, a romantic drama that also opens up into a larger idea of belonging and displacement.
Headlined by Diljit Dosanjh, the film teams him with Sharvari, Vedang Raina and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. Backed by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, Main Vaapas Aaunga is confirmed for a theatrical release on June 12, 2026. The makers unveiled the teaser today, offering a first proper look at Imtiaz Ali’s new world and its mood of romance laced with longing.
In a statement shared alongside the film’s launch communication, Ali framed the story as one rooted in the emotional aftermath of Partition. “Can love really be lost? Can home be taken away from someone’s heart? The biggest story of the century is migration. I feel privileged to get the chance to tell such a story on celluloid. This tale of fiction derives almost entirely from stories of people during the Partition. The past is always present,” he said, adding, “And decades later, when all incidents of woe have been spoken of, what remains is the early feeling of love that was too personal to share.”
Applause Entertainment Managing Director Sameer Nair also underlined the intent behind the collaboration: “Imtiaz Ali is one of the most distinctive storytellers of our time, with a remarkable ability to create unforgettable stories that stay with audiences. Main Vaapas Aaunga carries that same emotional sweep.”

Written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah, and is presented by Applause Entertainment as a Window Seat Films production. The music is composed by A R Rahman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, reuniting the celebrated Rahman, Kamil and Ali creative partnership.
