Kangana Ranaut may soon be stepping into the shoes of one of India’s most under-discussed revolutionaries, a woman whose story sits at the intersection of sacrifice, espionage, and the freedom movement. The actor, known for picking fearless historical figures, is now keen to headline a biopic on Neera Arya, widely remembered as a soldier of the Rani of Jhansi Regiment in the Azad Hind Fauj and cited in several accounts as its first woman spy.
The Latest Update On Biopic
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Kangana Ranaut is in early discussions to portray Neera Arya in a feature biopic, and filmmaker Shivam Nair has been approached to direct. The project is currently at the conversation stage, with key creative and production decisions still being worked out.
If the collaboration clicks, it would put together Kangana’s headline-grabbing screen presence with Nair’s grounded approach to thrillers and real-world storytelling.
Neera Arya’s life story, as recounted in multiple published biographies and features, is rooted in her association with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj, where she was part of the all-women Rani of Jhansi Regiment. Her story is also remembered for the extraordinary personal cost she allegedly paid after her marriage to a British-aligned officer turned into a conflict of ideologies, culminating in her arrest by British authorities and imprisonment that included severe torture. She later lived away from the spotlight and died in 1998, with her sacrifice receiving renewed attention only in recent years.
While the film is still in development, the subject itself is inherently cinematic, a freedom fighter operating in the shadows, making impossible choices, and paying a price history did not adequately document in mainstream narratives.
Kangana Ranaut’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Kangana was last seen in Emergency (2025), a political biographical drama that she directed and headlined as Indira Gandhi. Before that, she featured in Tejas (2023), where she played an Indian Air Force pilot, and the Tamil horror comedy Chandramukhi 2 (2023).
On the production front, she backed Tiku Weds Sheru (2023). If the Neera Arya film materialises with Shivam Nair, it would continue her run of real-life inspired roles, particularly women who sit at the centre of turbulent political and historical chapters.
