Meena Kumari fans have been eagerly waiting for her biopic, with Kriti Sanon set to portray the legendary actress and Manish Malhotra making his directorial debut. However, the highly anticipated project has faced another delay.
Originally planned to start filming in October 2023, it was first pushed to October 2024. Now, sources confirm it has been delayed again to early 2025. But what’s causing the hold-up this time?
Meena Kumari’s Biopic Delayed Due To Script Revision
According to insiders, the delay is due to script revisions. Malhotra wants the script to be perfect and is having it reviewed by multiple script doctors.
A source revealed to Mid-day, “The material will be vetted by multiple script doctors before it goes into filming. In a way, the delay might be good for the team. Since it’s a period drama, this allows them ample time for pre-production. Costumes are also a big part when recounting the story of one of Hindi cinema’s finest actors, and their recreation will take time. It will most likely roll in the first half of 2025.”
The yet-untitled biopic marks Kriti Sanon’s first biographical role in her decade-long career. The film aims to capture the life and legacy of Meena Kumari, known as the ‘Tragedy Queen’ for her poignant roles in classic films. Kumari’s career gave Indian cinema some unforgettable movies, from Baiju Bawra (1952) to Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Pakeezah (1972), before her life was tragically cut short by her death in 1972.
