Mansoor Khan’s 2000 film Josh remains a cult favourite. Packed with drama, romance, and rivalry, the film painted a vibrant picture of Goa’s street culture. Led by Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Chandrachur Singh, it earned praise for its music, action sequences, and the sizzling chemistry between its leads.
Despite mixed reviews for its story, Josh scored big at the box office, grossing Rs 35.06 crore worldwide and bagging 5 Filmfare nominations.
Now, over two decades later, an intriguing behind-the-scenes revelation has set the internet abuzz.
Aamir Wanted To Play Max Dias In Josh But Shah Rukh Khan Was The Only Choice
In an interview clip that surfaced on the internet, director Mansoor Khan shared that Aamir Khan was interested in playing Max Dias, the role played by Shah Rukh Khan.
Mansoor revealed, “I was intending to cast Aamir as the romantic lead opposite Aishwarya (the role Chandrachur Singh played). Aamir thought I was playing Max. I always had Shah Rukh Khan in my mind for Max’s role.”
He recalled approaching SRK with the script. “I went to Shah Rukh Khan, and he was very excited about Max. Then I narrated the whole script, and he said ‘Oh’ after hearing it. He said yes, and even suggested ideas like ‘In this scene, Max can do that.’”
But the twist came when Mansoor asked SRK directly if he would take on the role. To his surprise, SRK hesitated. “No,” SRK replied. “Because I know you are taking Aamir.”

Despite this, Mansoor stuck to his vision, and SRK eventually agreed. The rest, as they say, is history. SRK’s portrayal of Max, with his leather jackets, carefree swagger, and fiery charisma, became one of his most memorable performances.

Josh wasn’t just a movie; it was a vibe. Set against the sun-soaked backdrop of Goa, the story followed two rival street gangs—the Eagles, led by Max Dias (SRK), and the Bichhoos, helmed by Prakash Sharma (Sharad Kapoor). The tension between the gangs was heightened by a forbidden love story as Max’s twin sister, Shirley (Aishwarya Rai), fell for Rahul (Chandrachur Singh), Prakash’s younger brother.
