Mohanlal & AMMA Members RESIGN Amid Sexual Harassment Scandal In Malayalam Cinema, New Committee To Be Formed

Mohanlal and the entire AMMA executive committee have resigned following the release of the Hema Committee's explosive report.

Mohanlal has stepped down as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), along with all other officer bearers. This move comes a week after the Hema Committee report exposed disturbing details about the working conditions for women in the Malayalam film industry.

Shocking Revelations By Hema Committee About Malayalam Cinema

The Hema Committee, established in 2018, was tasked with investigating allegations of sexual harassment following a high-profile assault case involving a prominent actress in 2017.

Chaired by retired Justice K. Hema, the committee’s findings have rocked the industry. The report, finally released to the media under the RTI Act, revealed a shocking level of harassment, exploitation, and abuse within the industry.

The report details a “criminal gang” that allegedly controls the Malayalam film industry, where women who resist compromising their dignity are systematically pushed out. It highlights a “power nexus” involving producers, directors, actors, and production controllers who perpetuate this toxic environment.

Following the report’s publication, several women artists came forward with their own troubling stories, further amplifying the crisis. The committee found that many female professionals faced unwelcome advances even before their work began.

The report also described how women who refused to comply with inappropriate demands were sidelined and ostracised.

AMMA To Dissolved With Mohanlal & Others’ Resignation, New Committee To Be Formed

In response to these revelations, AMMA announced that the executive committee would be dissolved on moral grounds. “AMMA has decided to disperse the executive committee on moral grounds in the light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement said.

Among those implicated are three members of the AMMA executive committee: former general secretary Siddique, vice-president Jeyan R, and joint secretary Baburaj.

Their involvement in the scandal has further eroded confidence in the organisation’s ability to address harassment issues effectively.
