Monkey Man: CBFC Silent On Release Details Of Dev Patel’s Film Amidst RTI Inquiry; Trade Sources Claim It WON’T Arrive In India

Monkey Man release faces uncertainity as CBFC refuses to disclose certification decisions. Many claim that the film won't arrive in India.

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man premiered in US theatres and became available on international video-on-demand platforms but has not been made available in India, and it’s been more than a month delay. Dev Patel’s debut directorial venture is yet to hit Indian cinemas.

After missing the initial April 19 release date in India, an application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, requesting the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to disclose the decisions of its Examining Committee and Revising Committee.

CBFC Refuses To Reveal Details About Moneky Man India Release

On May 9, the CBFC rejected the request, stating that there was no significant public interest warranting the disclosure of such information. There’s no larger public interest that warrants the disclosure of such information. Hence the requested information cannot be provided,” it said.

The CBFC’s response to the RTI application began circulating on social media, sparking discussions in the film industry about the film’s fate in India.

Sources Claim Dev Patel’s Film WON’T Release In India

A trade insider, speaking anonymously, revealed that without CBFC clearance, the film might not even be available for streaming on OTT platforms in India. Legal action could be an option, but given that India isn’t the film’s primary market, it’s unlikely that Universal Pictures and Warner Bros will pursue it.

Since its theatrical release is in dispute, a CBFC clearance will be required to even stream it on OTT platforms in India. So, in all likelihood, Indian viewers might not even be able to catch it online. One way ahead could be to take the matter to court, but since India is not its main market, it’s highly unlikely that Universal Pictures and Warner Bros will take that step.

The movie premiered in the US, Canada, the UK, and Ireland through Universal Pictures on April 5, 2024. Its release in India, initially set for April 19, 2024, faced delays due to concerns about possible edits demanded by the Central Board of Film Certification.
