Single-screen has shaped most of our childhoods as before the advent of multiplexes, they were the go-to places for everyone in the country to enjoy movies. However, in the past few years, single screens have taken a hit as they have been shutting down at full speed across the nation. One of the most iconic single-screen theatres in Mumbai is Eros Cinema, which is located in Church gate.
Now, there is a piece of good news that Eros Cinema will be converted into an IMAX theatre with laser screen. Apart from that, it will also have several smaller screens. A source said that a majority of the work is finished and the theatres should open this year if the permissions are given from the government bodies.
The building will be a PVR-Inox as both the multiplex chains officially merged in May this year, making them one of the largest multiplex chains in the entire country. Another IMAX theatre will be opening soon this year at the Jio World Convention Centre.
Eros Was Going To Be Demolished
This year in April, there were rumors that the cinema hall will be shut down completely and the complex will be demolished. Since it means so much it the citizens of Mumbai, people started speaking out against it. Especially because the complex Art Deco structure was built in 1938 and remains one of Mumbai’s landmarks. Eventually, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that it won’t be demolished.

About Eros Cinema
In 1935, the foundation was laid and the cinema opened three years later in 1938. It also has a historical significance as the building is a part of The Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble of Mumbai, which was added to the World Heritage Sites list in 2018. In 2017, Eros Cinema shut down due to poor ticket sales and stiff competition from multiplexes. There was also a legal dispute after which it was sealed for a few months. If things go well, it will be the first IMAX screen to open in the South Mumbai region.
