Nazdeekiyan: Karan Johar Revisits Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna Themes For New Prime Video Series

Karan Johar returns to one of his most emotionally provocative storytelling spaces with Prime Video’s Nazdeekiyan. Backed by Dharmatic Entertainment, the series is shaping up as a relationship drama rooted in the kind of emotional messiness that made Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna one of the filmmaker’s most discussed works.

Why Nazdeekiyan Revives Johar’s Most Controversial Love Story

The strongest talking point around Nazdeekiyan is its clear thematic echo of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Johar’s 2006 film about marriage, longing and emotional betrayal. The new show is not a remake, but it draws from the same charged space of love colliding with commitment. A source quoted in the original report said, “The series is a contemporary take on infidelity. ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, though controversial at the time, aged well, with generations resonating with the four leads’ conflict. The team at Dharmatic was keen to revisit the idea, and from there, the story for ‘Nazdeekiyan’ was fleshed out.”

That detail immediately sets Nazdeekiyan apart from a routine romance. Johar has long been drawn to stories where desire and duty refuse to sit comfortably together, and this latest project places that conflict in a contemporary long-form format built for streaming audiences.

Prime Video’s New Relationship Drama Takes Shape

Prime Video announced Nazdeekiyan in March as part of its 2026 content slate. The series is produced by Dharmatic Entertainment and directed by Ruchir Arun. It is described as a 20-episode drama centered on two couples, suggesting a layered ensemble narrative rather than a conventional love story.

The cast includes Taha Shah Badussha, Nikita Dutta, Paresh Pahuja and Aakanksha Singh. The report also quoted an insider saying, “The DNA is similar, but the situations and setting of the four leads here are different.” That distinction positions Nazdeekiyan as a fresh series with its own world, even as it taps into a familiar emotional intensity that has long been part of Johar’s storytelling signature.

Taha Shah Badussha And Nikita Dutta Bring Fresh OTT Momentum

The casting gives Nazdeekiyan extra intrigue at a time when both Taha Shah Badussha and Nikita Dutta have been building strong streaming visibility. Taha’s breakout turn in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar in 2024 pushed him into a far bigger pop culture conversation, making this Dharmatic series a smart next move in his OTT run.

Nikita, meanwhile, has steadily carved out a strong screen presence across film and streaming. She featured in Netflix’s Khakee: The Bihar Chapter in 2022 and was later seen in Gharat Ganpati in 2024 and Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins in 2025. With Nazdeekiyan, both actors step into a glossy ensemble drama that feels aligned with Prime Video’s push for high-concept Hindi originals in 2026, while also giving Johar another chance to explore the emotional fault lines that have always fascinated him.
