NCB Won’t Be Challenging Bail Granted To Rhea Chakraborty In Drug Case

The year 2020 was a tumultuous time for everyone across the globe. People were locked inside their homes due to Covid-19 pandemic-induced lockdown. Around that time, Sushant Singh Rajput passed away tragically all of a sudden. Subsequently, his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was arrested over a drug case by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

She was later released on bail. Now, according to a recent report, the NCB informed the Supreme Court that it won’t be challenging the bail given to Rhea in the drugs case. The drug case was registered against her after alleging that she was part of a ‘drug dealers’ syndicate. They had orchestrated the purchase of drugs for the late actor. On 8 September 8, 2020, Rhea was arrested by the NDPS and received bail nearly a month later on 4 October 2020.

According to Live Law India, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju (representing NCB) told Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh that the bail will not be challenged. “At this stage the challenge to impugned order may not be required. However, the question of law would be kept open. This judgment of HC would not be taken as a precedent for any other case,” the bench said.

The 2021 Court Statement Over Her Case

In 2021, the High Court bench headed by Justice SV Kotwal said, “She is not part of drug dealers. She has not forwarded the drugs allegedly procured by her to somebody else to earn monetary or other benefits.” They further said that Rhea was not guilty under the IPC sections for drug offenses. The NCB tried to pin Section 27A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) on her.

Rhea’s Witchhunt By The Media

On 14 June 2020, Sushant Singh Rajput passed away. While the initial evidence suggested it was a case of suicide, later on, the media and his fans stated that he was murdered. Subsequently, everyone started accusing Rhea of abetting his suicide since she was his girlfriend. Rhea was then hounded by the media and netizens. However, at the same time, she also received a lot of support from Bollywood folks like Anurag Kashyap, Konkana Sen Sharma, etc. Recently, an episode on Kajol-starrer web series The Trial was heavily inspired by the coverage of Rhea after the death of Sushant.
