In a recent interview, renowned designer Neeta Lulla shared an intriguing anecdote about her first encounter with actress Aishwarya Rai. It happened in the late director Yash Chopra’s office, where they contemplated casting Aishwarya for the film “Darr.” Neeta revealed that they conducted a look test to assess Aishwarya’s suitability for the role. Both Neeta and Yash ji were impressed by Aishwarya’s beauty during the test, but due to her participation in the Miss World Pageant, they thought the timing might not work out. As fate would have it, Aishwarya went on to become Miss World, and the role in Darr eventually went to Juhi Chawla, leading to the movie’s success with Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol.

At that time, Aishwarya was donning her Jodhaa wedding outfit. She expressed her desire not to have a similar look for her real wedding and instead wished to be dressed in a traditional kanjeevaram saree. Aishwarya instructed Neeta to coordinate with her mother and explore options for getting the kanjeevaram saree woven and decide on the design details.
Neeta Lulla also disclosed that Aishwarya was keen on showcasing her cultural heritage through her wedding outfit and dismissed any speculations about the saree costing Rs 75 lakh. Emphasizing Aishwarya’s South Indian roots as a Tulu, Neeta explained that it was essential for her to reflect her cultural upbringing and values in her wedding ensemble, a goal they successfully achieved.
