Aamir Khan has turned the industry upside down again—but not with a film, a new release strategy.
His upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, which is already creating a buzz, is now a digital war between traditional OTT service providers and Khan’s independent distribution model. In an effort to beat disruption, Netflix has reportedly doubled down on its original offer of ₹60 crore to offer Aamir Khan a massive ₹130 crore for exclusive streaming rights.
Netflix Raises The Stakes: ₹60 Cr Digital Deal Expanded To ₹130 Cr Overnight
Sources say Netflix first looked to only do a partner digital deal in the range of ₹50–60 crore—quite standard for an A-list Bollywood title. However, with Khan wanting to go out of the box with a YouTube pay-per-view model, the global streaming giant had no choice but to increase their bid substantially. Netflix’s ₹130 crore bid is one of the highest in digital rights for a Bollywood film.
“This is not just about Sitaare Zameen Par—this is about controlling the future of Indian film distribution,” says one industry veteran.
Aamir’s Vision: YouTube Pay-Per-View For All
In sharp contrast to existing OTT releases subject to monthly subscriptions, Aamir Khan is recommending a one-time payment model on YouTube, providing Sitaare Zameen Par at a nominal price directly to the audience.
“This will open access to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where expensive subscription models are often unattainable,” Aamir said to his industry peers at a closed-door conclave a few weeks ago.
The actor even alluded to recently uploading Taare Zameen Par for free on YouTube for 1–2 weeks on his channel Aamir Khan Talkies to reinforce his commitment to open-access platforms.
Netflix’s Concerns: Disruption of the OTT Monopoly
This is not just about Netflix acquiring a high-profile film but about maintaining its ongoing relevance.
“If Aamir succeeds, he will create a ripple effect. Other filmmakers will seek out YouTube Pay-Per-View, and pay-per-view will threaten the exclusivity that the OTTs operate on,” shares an executive who is tracking the deal closely.
In essence, Sitaare Zameen Par could be the Oppenheimer moment for the distribution of Indian films, creating a cultural and commercial shift that changes the rules of the game.
What’s On The Line For Bollywood
If Aamir carries on with YouTube Pay-Per-View, Sitaare Zameen Par might:
- Reach many millions of viewers who do not typically access premium OTT apps
- Receive direct revenue without the margins going to an OTT service
- Create a new supply chain gap for independent filmmakers to use to reach mass audiences
- Reduce the reliance on multi-year OTT deals to earn post-theatrical profit
Sitaare Zameen Par: The Film Disrupting The System
A spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par, R.S. Prasanna‘s sports drama about Aamir as a basketball coach for specially abled children alongside Genelia D’Souza and ten debutants, is coming to theaters June 20, 2025.
The anticipation for Sitaare Zameen Par is already building through
- Meetups with fans of the original cast of TZP
- Viral stories featuring Darsheel Safary‘s memories from the film’s set
- Emotional revelations from actors like Vipin Sharma
- Aamir’s promise to make cinema more accessible and democratic

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
This is not simply a movie—it’s a flashpoint in Bollywood’s digital evolution.
With Netflix offering ₹130 crore to lock up Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan has forced the biggest players in entertainment to rethink their practices. Regardless of whether he takes the largest payout or further adopts his principle of mass access, Khan already is winning the story.
If YouTube Pay-Per-View launches, it could hang a new paradigm for everyone to follow. Even if Netflix were to win the auction, it still validates the drama of Aamir’s story in a way that no one other than Aamir Khan could do.
In one way or another, Sitaare Zameen Par is making history—both in front of the camera and behind it.
