About The Film
Set in the 13th century, Padmaavat tells the story of Queen Padmavati, played by Deepika Padukone, admired for her beauty and wisdom. The film follows her husband, Maharawal Ratan Singh of Mewar (portrayed by Shahid Kapoor) and Sultan Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh).
Khilji’s obsessive ambition to capture Padmavati leads to his invasion of Chittor, but the queen’s bravery and sacrifice remain at the heart of the story.
The original release of Padmaavat in 2018 was met with strong protests. Rajput groups like the Karni Sena claimed the film misrepresented Queen Padmavati and distorted history. During filming, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali faced physical assault at Jaipur’s Jaigarh Fort.
The controversies escalated further when armed protesters attacked the film’s sets in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, causing major damage. To address the issues, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recommended changes, including renaming the film from Padmavat to Padmaavat.
Despite these challenges, the film was released on January 25, 2018, and became a huge success. It earned acclaim for its stunning visuals, powerful performances, and Bhansali’s direction.
