The Man Behind The Madness: Why Paresh Rawal Walked Away
Throughout the years, Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, famously known as Babu Bhaiya, has reached the status of a pop culture icon. The character, portrayed by Paresh Rawal, has left generations laughing with his signature white dhoti, large glasses, and fantastic one-liners like “Ladki ka chakkar Babu Bhaiya.” So when Rawal confirmed that he would not reprise the role for Hera Pheri 3, the audience was shocked and left wondering why.
But it wasn’t just an impulsive decision to leave. In a previous interview, the veteran actor detailed how emotionally and creatively bonded to the role he truly was. In a recent interview, Paresh Rawal said:
“I felt choked. I need mukti. Now this role has become like a ‘gale ka phanda’.”
Babu Bhaiya: Blessing or a Curse?
Even with Babu Bhaiya’s cult following, Rawal felt creatively boxed in. He mentioned that even in 2007, a year post Phir Hera Pheri, he approached director Vishal Bhardwaj with a request to help him “escape” the role of Babu Bhaiya.
“I went to Vishal Bhardwaj and said, ‘I have a film idea. I want to get rid of this image.’ You are the only person to help me find a new character in the same outfit.”
He stressed that he does not want to be typecast forever:
“I am an actor. I don’t want to get stuck in one place.”
Rawal Confirms There Are ‘No Creative Differences’ With Priyadarshan
With plenty of conjecture about whether he resigned due to some creative differences with director Priyadarshan, Rawal insisted:
“I REPEAT THERE ARE NO CREATIVE DIFFERENCES WITH THE FILM MAKER. I have nothing but love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan.”
This public statement clarified any and all confusion and shifted the discussion back to Rawal’s heartfelt revelation as an artist.
Will Hera Pheri 3 Work Without Baburao?
With Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty still attached and Priyadarshan at the helm again, Hera Pheri 3 looks pretty close to its previous versions. Will the franchise truly survive without its most iconic character?
That is still an open-ended question, and with the film now entering production, it is one that we will have to wait to find out the answer to. For now, fans can merely reflect on Babu Bhaiya’s former exploits that subsequently stamped the series into our memories.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Sure, he’s leaving Babu Bhaiya behind, and that might hurt, but it’s also a sad realisation that can often be associated with beloved roles. When Paresh Rawal told me he needed “mukti”, I was witnessing something that is often obscured when someone is popular. And whether or not Rawal returns, Hera Pheri 3 has huge shoes and a huge pair of round glasses to fill.
As for the fans? They’ll miss him.
