Peddi: Ashika Ranganath And Dimple Hayathi Defend Janhvi Kapoor Amid Backlash Over Achiyyamma Portrayal

The conversation around Janhvi Kapoor’s Achiyyamma in Peddi has moved beyond one performance and into a sharper industry debate. As criticism of her portrayal in the Ram Charan starrer continues online, Ashika Ranganath and Dimple Hayathi have stepped in with a pointed message, stop blaming the actress for a part shaped by the writing and the filmmaking system.

Ashika Ranganath Backs Janhvi Kapoor

Ashika Ranganath, known for her work across Kannada, Tamil and Telugu cinema, addressed the backlash through Instagram Stories. She argued that commercial cinema often places female characters inside hero driven narratives, leaving actresses to carry the criticism for choices made much earlier on the page and set.

Ashika wrote, “Don’t blame the actress. Blame the system and the makers who still thinks this is what sells. Actors often work within the opportunities available to them, hoping to be a part of bigger films and reach wider audiences. If female characters feel underwritten, the responsibility lies more with the writing and filmmaking choices than with the women playing those roles.”

Her statement has resonated because the discussion around Peddi is no longer just about Achiyyamma, but about how actresses are routinely judged for roles that may not give them enough agency or dramatic space.

Dimple Hayathi also supported Janhvi on X, writing, “I’m so glad today on this day we all are speaking about how actresses roles are being written and the instinctive response to blame actress after doing what she was offered ,dont blame the actress blame the system and makers who really think that’s what sells .. and we actors get to work within the opportunities what we get trying to make it big and hoping we would be working in bigger films and reach wider audiences. If the characters are underwritten the responsibility lies more with writing and filmmaking choices than woman playing the role . Unfortunately we are stereotyped by image which and how things unfold with characters that we play without getting the opportunity to showcase our full potential to perform ,whereas when the hero centered stories takeover the liberty to project . What we see is what we believe unfortunately. No body knows what gets into filmmaking it’s not under one persons choice but we all can unanimously make a point that we deserve better experiences and better filmmaking .”
