Ram Gopal Varma is returning to Mumbai’s crime-shadowed landscape with a story rooted in one of the city’s most talked-about police figures. Harshvardhan Rane has been locked to headline Police Company, a T-Series-backed film based on the life of former Mumbai encounter specialist Daya Nayak, bringing together a filmmaker long drawn to the underworld and an actor entering a busy new phase of his career.
According to reports in Bollywood Hungama, the project is now moving ahead in earnest, with pre-production already underway and filming scheduled to begin in the third week of August. The film will follow Nayak’s journey from a small village in Mangalore to the Mumbai Police, charting the years that made him one of the most recognisable officers associated with the city’s anti-organised crime operations in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The new film is also being positioned as the revival of Varma’s Company franchise after Company and D Company, though it is conceived as a standalone story with no narrative link to those earlier films. The project’s current status has been summed up in no uncertain terms, with the source confirming that it has “recently regained momentum and is officially back on track.”
That line matters because Police Company has clearly been a long-gestating idea for Varma. Daya Nayak’s life has inspired multiple screen adaptations over the years, but this film is being mounted as a full-scale biographical drama rather than a partial fictionalised chapter. Varma’s own history with the material goes back to Ab Tak Chhappan, the 2004 Nana Patekar-starrer that drew inspiration from Nayak’s life and the policing culture of that era.

For Rane, Police Company arrives at a time when his film choices are widening in scale and genre. In the last few years, he has balanced streaming and theatrical work through titles such as Haseen Dillruba in 2021 and Tara vs Bilal in 2022, before returning to the big screen with Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat in 2025.
What makes the Varma collaboration stand out is the company it now keeps within Rane’s slate. He is also attached to Silaa, while Force 3 remains one of his major announced upcoming films. Seen in that context, Police Company becomes more than another addition to his lineup.
