This opening surpassed other recent Indian releases like Salaar (JPY 5.50 million) and Jawan (JPY 4.75 million) and came close to RRR’s launch day numbers of JPY 9.14 million.
Kalki 2898 AD Witnesses Amazing Start In Japan Amid New Year Holiday
The release coincided with Japan’s New Year holiday period, a peak time for cinema attendance. This gave Kalki 2898 AD an edge over Salaar, Jawan, and RRR, which were released on regular Fridays.
Despite this strong start, experts predict that the weekend total for Kalki will likely match Salaar’s JPY 18.25 million or Jawan’s JPY 16.50 million, falling short of RRR’s JPY 45 million weekend haul.
Film May Face Challenges To Maintain The Momentum After Low Ratings
Japan’s box office often values films that can maintain their appeal over time rather than relying on an initial big opening. Movies like RRR and Baahubali succeeded here due to excellent word-of-mouth and high audience ratings.
However, Kalki 2898 AD has received lower viewer ratings, averaging in the low 3s on platforms like Eiga, Yahoo Movies, and Filmarks, compared to RRR and Baahubali’s 4+ scores. While these ratings aren’t definitive, they suggest potential challenges in sustaining momentum.
Originally released in June 2024, Kalki 2898 AD has already established itself as one of the biggest Indian films of the year. With global earnings exceeding Rs 1000 crore, the movie is the second-highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, just behind Pushpa 2.
