Director Priyadarshan has reacted to actor Arshad Warsi‘s recent claims about having a bad experience on the sets of Hulchul. The filmmaker has expressed shock and disappointment over the accusations, stating that he is deeply hurt by what Warsi has said.
In a recent interview, Arshad Warsi had claimed that he was tricked into playing a smaller role in the 2004 comedy film. He alleged that screenplay and dialogue writer Neeraj Vora had pitched the part as being similar to Akshay Kumar’s role in Hera Pheri, but he eventually ended up playing the lead actor’s friend instead.
Priyadarshan Says He Is Shocked
Reacting to Warsi’s claims, Priyadarshan said that he was very upset when he read what the actor had said. He added that he could be wrong and maybe it has been misinterpreted, but if Warsi has complained, he is shocked by it.
The director, who is currently busy with post production work on Haiwaan starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, expressed surprise that Warsi never voiced these concerns earlier despite working together on the film.
Warsi Called To Appreciate After Release
Priyadarshan recalled a phone call with Arshad Warsi after the release of Hulchul. The filmmaker revealed that Warsi had called him and said that he never thought he would get this kind of appreciation for his performance in the film.
The director stated that Hulchul was a big hit but Arshad said it was a flop film. He added that this has pained him and questioned why the actor would say that when it was one of his hit films. The film collected Rs 31 crore at the box office.
Lucky Bhalla Was Loved By Audiences
Priyadarshan pointed out that Warsi’s character Lucky Bhalla was loved by both audiences and critics. He noted that viewers continue to rewatch the Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan, and Shakti Kapoor starrer even today.
The filmmaker acknowledged that Munna Bhai MBBS in 2003 marked a turning point in Warsi’s career, but stated that Hulchul strengthened his comic timing significantly.
Director Says Warsi Had No Reason To Complain
Priyadarshan concluded by saying that people loved and appreciated Warsi’s performance in Hulchul. He expressed that he is very upset and deeply hurt by these accusations from Arshad Warsi. The director firmly stated that the actor had no reason to complain about the film or his role in it.
Hulchul remains the only project that Priyadarshan and Arshad Warsi have worked on together to date.
