Filmmaker Priyadarshan is busy working on his new project Bhooth Bangla with Akshay Kumar. The film mixes fantasy and comedy and draws comparisons to the 2022 South hit Kantara, directed by Rishab Shetty.
In a recent interview with ETV Bharat, Priyadarshan explained the inspiration behind the film and its connection to mythology.
Priyadarshan On What Inspired Him For Bhooth Bangla
Bhoot Bangla explores the concept of black magic, a topic still feared in many parts of India. Priyadarshan shared, “There are a lot of people in India who believe in it. I know in the deep South and North, black magic is a significant fear for people. When you present it in a hilarious film, I think it should work. I am extremely happy about Bhoot Bangla, and I am trying this for the first time.”
He also noted how the film taps into India’s rich mythological and fantasy traditions, similar to Kantara. He added, “Look at Kantara, which is based on those beliefs. So it is rooted in one of the villagers’ beliefs and how black magic works. It is a fantasy comedy.”
On Akshay-Suniel-Paresh Rawal’s Hera Pheri 3
Besides Bhooth Bangla, Priyadarshan also gave an update on Hera Pheri 3, the much-awaited sequel to the popular comedy franchise. After a series of delays and legal issues, Akshay Kumar recently confirmed that Priyadarshan will direct the third part.
Fans are excited to see the director return, especially given his success with the first Hera Pheri, which became a cult classic. Priyadarshan recalled, “I was very confident that Hera Pheri would work, but I never expected it to become a cult film. It had decent humour and excellent performances. People never believed that Akshay, Suniel, and Paresh could pull off a comedy because those days they were doing different kinds of movies. But it surprised them, and the success of Hera Pheri was a turning point in their careers.”
The director feels the pressure to meet the high expectations set for the third instalment. He admitted, “It is going to be very challenging to make the third part because there will be too many expectations. People are waiting to see Akshay, Paresh, and Suniel again.”
He added, “We always say that it is easy to make people cry, it is easy to scare people, but to make them laugh is very difficult and that too without using double entendre dialogues… you have to make humour so pure and identifiable.”
He acknowledged that humour evolves over time & it is important to connect with modern audiences in a fresh way.
Currently, Priyadarshan is focused on Bhooth Bangla, which also stars Paresh Rawal and Tabu alongside Akshay Kumar. As for Hera Pheri 3, he plans to begin working on the script next year.
