In a dramatic and concerning turn of events, producer-actor Pallavi Joshi has made a desperate appeal to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. Just one day before its nationwide release on September 5, her film, The Bengal Files, is facing what she calls an “unofficial ban” in West Bengal.
Joshi took to Instagram to share an open letter addressed to the President, claiming that multiplex chains in the state are refusing to screen her film. She alleges that this is happening due to immense political pressure and threats from the ruling party, effectively silencing the film before the public even gets a chance to see it.
What Pallavi Joshi’s Letter Says
In her powerful letter, Pallavi Joshi makes it clear she is not asking for any special favours, but for the protection of her constitutional rights. She wrote, “With a heavy heart, I reach out to you, not for favours, but for protection.” She claims that theatre owners have been intimidated and are now refusing to screen the film because they fear violence from ruling party workers.
She further revealed that the opposition to the film has been going on for years. The Chief Minister had mocked the film long before it was even completed, and since then, the team has faced baseless FIRs and even had their trailer launch in Kolkata blocked by the police. Joshi also made the shocking claim that her family receives threats every single day.
A Pattern Of Opposition
This is not the first time The Bengal Files has run into trouble in the state. The situation escalated recently when the Kolkata Police unexpectedly interrupted the film’s trailer launch event, stopping the screening midway through. This act was seen by many as a direct attempt to suppress the film’s promotion and has only added to the growing controversy.
Pallavi Joshi also mentioned in her letter that she is not fighting this battle alone. Legendary Bengali actor and Padma Bhushan recipient Victor Banerjee, along with several other Bengali organisations in India and abroad, have also petitioned the President in support of the film’s release. This shows a growing chorus of voices demanding that the film be allowed to be shown without fear.

The Bengal Files is the final movie in the ‘Files Trilogy’, which includes The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. The film reportedly deals with the suppressed history of events like the Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots. It features a large ensemble cast, including Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Saswata Chatterjee, and Puneet Issar.
