The makers of the upcoming romantic comedy Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri are reportedly facing serious legal trouble. Legendary filmmaker Rajiv Rai has threatened to take Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday‘s film to court over an alleged copyright violation. This is a big deal for the Christmas release.
The controversy started when the announcement promo of the film was unveiled in December 2024. The 32 second teaser featured the opening beats of Saat Samundar, the iconic chartbuster from Rajiv Rai’s 1992 blockbuster Vishwatma. Movie fans immediately recognized the legendary tune. But there was a problem. The director claims nobody asked for his permission to use his music.
Rajiv Rai Issues A Strong Warning
The filmmaker is not happy at all. Rajiv Rai has instructed his legal team to alert Dharma Productions, which is backing Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, and music label Saregama about the violation. Speaking to a leading publication, Rai expressed his disappointment over the unauthorized use of his music.
According to the filmmaker, while Saregama owns the rights to some of his songs, his agreement with the label never included a clause allowing them to use the music in other movies. He made it very clear that using the beats without his permission is completely unacceptable. He believes it sets a bad trend in the industry.
The Legal Route Is Ready
Rajiv Rai shared that his legal team is all set to approach producer Karan Johar and the entire team. He is hopeful that the matter can be resolved amicably without going to court. The director personally does not like creating legal situations as it wastes time, energy, and money.
However, he also made it clear that if the protocol to get a song’s rights is not followed properly, he will have no choice but to take legal action. He stated firmly that if any content from his films is used by another movie, he will go to court before or after the release. This shows how serious he is about protecting his work.
This Is Not The First Time
Interestingly, this is not the first time Rajiv Rai has faced such a situation. The hit song Tip Tip Barsa Paani from his 1994 film Mohra was remixed for Sooryavanshi in 2021, initially without his permission. The filmmaker took the makers to court. Since Karan Johar had produced that film too, he arranged a meeting with director Rohit Shetty and Rajiv Rai. The matter was settled, and the filmmaker was reportedly paid a settlement amount before giving permission.
However, Rajiv Rai is also known for his generosity. He gave the rights of Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela, the famous song from his 1997 thriller Gupt, to Shah Rukh Khan completely free of cost. The track was used in Aryan Khan’s debut series The Bads of Bollywood. At the time, he said he could not refuse because it was for Shah Rukh’s son.
