While Rajkummar Rao awaits the opportunity to play cricketing great Sourav Ganguly, the actor is busy filling his calendar up before that big innings. The film, currently in pre-production, will see Rao before he dives into a quirky murder comedy, directed by Aditya Nimbalkar, who is known for Sector 36.
A Dark Comedy Murder Mystery
According to sources, the Netflix-backed film is said to be a dark comedy and a new take on the murder mystery. Set to start filming this June, the still-untitled film will be shot all over Mumbai, mainly at 1 Aerocity in Marol and Film City in Goregaon.
“It’s a murder mystery but with quirky twists. Coen brothers meet Delhi Belly,”
— a source close to the project said.
Interestingly, Rao was so taken by the script that he chose to join the project as a co-producer — his second time producing after Toaster, which will be released by Netflix later this year.
From Sector 36 to a Comedy — Aditya Nimbalkar‘s Genre Changes
Aditya Nimbalkar stunned many with the gritty realism of his debut, Sector 36 (2024), but now he is branching out into a more stylised, darkly humorous tone.
Sourav Ganguly Biopic: Still On The Bench
In the meantime, the Sourav Ganguly biopic, to be directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, is still being scripted and developed. The film is a reunion of sorts for Rao and Motwane, as they last worked together on the survival drama Trapped (2016), which was well-received by critics.
“There is intense pressure to get Dada’s story right,”
— a source close to the biopic said.
“The team is digging deep and researching each stage of Dada’s journey.”

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
While the Sourav Ganguly biopic is still waiting to move into production, Rajkummar Rao is not resting on his laurels. The actor is once again entering the black comedy space with Aditya Nimbalkar’s upcoming Netflix project, and if he is wickedly hysterical as he was in Badhaai Ho, it wouldn’t be surprising if this genre-hopping venture becomes the sleeper hit of 2026.
Rao, as always, continues to demonstrate he is the most versatile star of his generation, both in front of and behind the camera.
