One of Indian cinema’s most ambitious spectacles is taking a longer route to the big screen. Ramayana: Part 2, the second chapter of Namit Malhotra and Nitesh Tiwari‘s mythological franchise led by Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, is now headed for Diwali 2028, giving the makers more time to mount the saga’s most expansive stretch with the scale it demands.
The change stands out because Ramayana is being developed as a two-part theatrical event rather than a standard sequel cycle. The first film remains scheduled for a worldwide release on 5 November 2026, while the second chapter has now moved beyond its earlier 2027 target as the story enters its biggest war-driven phase.
Ramayana 2 Now Eyes Diwali 2028
A new update carried by Bollywood Hungama states that Ramayana: Part 2 has been pushed to Diwali 2028 even as Ramayana: Part One stays on course for its Diwali 2026 debut. The publication cited a source saying, “Ramayana is an emotion for Namit Malhotra, and he is leaving no stone unturned to present the Indian audience with a cinema-watching experience like never before. While the first part is set to release in a couple of days from now, the second instalment needs some more shooting time. As everyone knows, the real scale of Ramayana is in the second part, where the ‘Yudh’ actually unfolds.”
The same update added that the action design for the second film took longer than expected as the team aimed to create large-scale original set pieces. It also quoted the source as saying, “Namit is confident to leave a global mark with Ramayana and hence, he has already decided to up the scale of Ramayana 2. He is not letting the monies come in between his vision of taking Indian story at a global level. The cost of production of Rs. 3,000 crore will be visible on every frame of Ramayana franchise.”
Cast, Production And Storytelling Scale
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is backed by Prime Focus Studios, DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The announced cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Rama and Yash as Ravana, alongside Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol and Ravie Dubey. Sony Pictures is handling the film’s international rollout outside India, while Dharma Productions is distributing it across North India’s Hindi-speaking markets.
The franchise is mounted as a two-part retelling of the Ramayana, with the first chapter establishing the central journey and the second expected to move into the epic conflict on a much larger canvas.
Ranbir Kapoor And Yash’s Current Line-Up
For Ranbir Kapoor, Ramayana continues a run of ambitious star-led projects after Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Animal, both released in 2023. He is also part of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, which is currently slated for 2027.
For Yash, the film is a major post-KGF: Chapter 2 milestone. He returned to theatres with Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups in 2026 before stepping into the role of Ravana in Ramayana: Part 1, a project that remains one of the most closely watched pan-India titles on the horizon.
