Ramayana has locked a release plan that instantly sets it apart from the usual big ticket festive release. Producer Namit Malhotra has confirmed that the mythological epic will open in international markets on November 6, 2026, before arriving in Indian cinemas on Diwali, November 8, 2026, giving the film a carefully split global launch designed around how different theatrical markets operate.
The clarification comes after the film’s English trailer triggered conversation over the date mentioned in its promotional material. Rather than a mismatch, the two dates are part of a deliberate strategy. For a film mounted as a major theatrical spectacle, the move signals that the makers are thinking beyond a conventional one day worldwide drop and tailoring the rollout to both overseas business patterns and the emotional weight of a Diwali opening in India.
Namit Malhotra Explains The India And Overseas Release Plan
When asked about the film’s release date, Namit Malhotra said, “It’ll release in India on Diwali.” When he was specifically asked if that meant Ramayana would release in Indian theatres on November 8, he replied in the affirmative.
He also addressed why the trailer mentioned November 6. Explaining the difference in strategy, Malhotra said, “So, we are releasing internationally (on November 6). The international distribution works from a Friday standpoint. So, that is on the 6th of November. But India currently we are targeting a release on Diwali.”
That distinction gives Ramayana a Friday start overseas while preserving the symbolic strength of a Diwali day launch at home. It is an unusual but smart release design, especially for a title that is expected to play as a large scale event across territories.
Why This Release Strategy Strengthens Ramayana’S Event Film Ambitions
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Dharma Productions will distribute the film in India, while Sony Pictures is handling international distribution. The music is composed by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, underlining the scale the makers are aiming for with this adaptation of the Indian epic.
What makes this rollout especially interesting is the positioning. The overseas launch on Friday, November 6, 2026, allows the film to plug into the standard weekend moviegoing cycle in international markets, while the India release on Sunday, November 8, 2026, ties the home market debut directly to Diwali. For a story so deeply rooted in cultural memory, that festive alignment gives the release a sense of occasion that a routine Friday opening may not have delivered in India.
The film’s first part is slated for Diwali 2026, with the second part planned for Diwali 2027. With its starry ensemble, premium distribution partners and a release model built around both commerce and sentiment, Ramayana is clearly being positioned not just as a film, but as a theatrical landmark in the making.
