Ranbir Kapoor’s Dussehra speech slip-up may have gone viral in minutes, but the actor moved quickly to set the record straight, and did so with an apology that was both direct and disarming. After a line from his Kolkata appearance triggered backlash online, Kapoor addressed the controversy in Chennai, corrected himself publicly, and even borrowed a memorable Rockstar lyric to explain how badly words can fail in the moment.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Viral Remark At The Dussehra Event
At the Kolkata event on October 20, Kapoor opened with “Jai Shri Ram” and greeted the audience warmly. He said, “My greetings. It gives me great pleasure, and it’s an honour to celebrate Dussehra with all of you in the holy land of Kolkata. I thank the CM and everyone present here from my heart.”
The controversy began when he accidentally flipped the meaning of Dussehra’s message while speaking about the triumph of good over evil. Kapoor said, “Dussehra reminds us of something beautiful. That no matter how strong evil is, in the end, it is goodness and honesty that perishes.” The clip spread rapidly online and drew instant attention.
Ranbir’s Apology In Chennai
Kapoor addressed the moment a day later at a promotional event in Chennai on October 21 and apologised publicly. He said, “I would like to actually take this opportunity to apologise about an incident that happened yesterday. I was at the Dussehra event and I had a slip of tongue, like a slip of the tongue, they say.”
He then clarified what he had intended to say about Dussehra. “No matter how powerful evil may be, in the end, goodness and truth will prevail.”
What gave the apology an extra lift was the way Kapoor folded humour into it without diluting the regret. He said, “So, this reminds me of a collaboration that I had with A.R. Rahman sir and Rockstar, what I want to say is, ‘Jo bhi main kehna chahun, barbaad kare alfaaz mere’. So, I truly apologise for that,” a line that earned cheers from the crowd.
Why The Apology Landed
The Chennai appearance worked in Kapoor’s favour because he did not dodge the moment or over-explain it. He acknowledged the mistake head-on, corrected the line clearly, and let the apology breathe instead of turning it into a defensive statement.
The Rockstar reference also helped shift the tone. It brought a touch of self-awareness to the moment, making the apology feel human rather than rehearsed. That balance of sincerity and charm is what made the clarification travel almost as widely as the original clip.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Away from the controversy, Kapoor remains in a significant phase of his career. He was last seen in Animal in 2023, which became the biggest theatrical success of his career. Earlier that same year, he also starred in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, returning to a breezier romantic comedy zone.
His next major theatrical release is Ramayana: Part 1, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and scheduled for November 2026, with Yash and Sai Pallavi in key roles. He also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War lined up with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.
