Josh Brolin Teases Thanos Vs Doctor Doom As Robert Downey Jr Steps Into Avengers Doomsday Villain Role

Marvel fans may not have a Thanos comeback announcement yet, but Josh Brolin has clearly enjoyed stirring the conversation. The actor, who played the Mad Titan across multiple Marvel blockbusters, has now weighed in on Robert Downey Jr’s shock MCU return as Doctor Doom, and his response is only adding to the intrigue around Avengers: Doomsday.

Brolin was asked about the possibility of sharing screen space with Downey Jr again, this time with the latter playing Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark. He did not shut the idea down. In fact, he leaned into it. Brolin said, “Having been in that situation with Robert (Downey Jr), in that scenario, I would love a different scenario. I would love it. It would be great. And who wouldn’t want to see it?”

That was enough to set off fresh chatter around whether Marvel could engineer a Thanos return in some form, especially with the multiverse now firmly embedded in the studio’s storytelling.

Josh Brolin Keeps The Mystery Alive

When the conversation turned to the bigger fan debate, whether Thanos could actually defeat Doctor Doom, Brolin chose not to pick a winner. Instead, he said, “Dude, does it matter what I say at this point? Leave the mystery. Embrace the mystery.”

It is a classic tease, but it lands at a moment when Avengers: Doomsday is already one of Marvel’s most closely watched titles. Robert Downey Jr’s casting as Victor von Doom marked one of the franchise’s boldest pivots, especially after Tony Stark’s emotional end in Avengers: Endgame. The idea of Downey returning not as a hero but as one of Marvel’s most formidable villains has radically shifted expectations around the film.

Avengers Doomsday Release And Mcu Context

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theatres on December 18, 2026. The film is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which gives this latest chapter added weight for longtime MCU viewers. Doctor Doom’s arrival also signals a major villain transition for the franchise after Thanos dominated Marvel’s Infinity Saga.

Brolin’s original MCU arc ended with Thanos’ defeat in Endgame, released in 2019. But Marvel’s current multiverse framework has kept the door open for past characters and alternate versions to re-enter the story, which is exactly why Brolin’s comments are drawing so much attention.

Josh Brolin’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Outside Marvel, Brolin most recently appeared on the big screen in Dune: Part Two in 2024, reprising Gurney Halleck in Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed sci-fi epic. His recent filmography also includes Brothers and Weapons, both released in 2025, reflecting a phase where he has balanced franchise visibility with darker, filmmaker-driven material.

Looking ahead, Brolin is attached to The Dog Stars in 2026, adding another high-profile title to his upcoming slate. Even without a confirmed Marvel return, his latest comments have ensured that the Thanos conversation is very much alive as Avengers: Doomsday moves closer to release.
