Ramayana has just taken a major step toward becoming one of Indian cinema’s biggest theatrical events. Nitesh Tiwari’s mythological epic, led by Ranbir Kapoor, has locked Dharma Productions as its Indian distributor, a move that significantly strengthens the film’s domestic rollout ahead of its Diwali 2026 release.
The deal gives producer Namit Malhotra’s ambitious two-part saga a powerful exhibition and marketing ally in India at a time when anticipation around the film is already running high. With a cast stacked with stars and an international release strategy now in place, Ramayana is clearly being positioned as a large-scale event title.
The Latest Update
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Dharma Productions has secured the Indian distribution rights for Ramayana. The development follows a selection process in which Malhotra showed an edited 30-minute cut of the film to multiple studios before closing the agreement.
The distribution pact was finalised at ₹250 crore after negotiations, giving Dharma the domestic reins for one of the most closely watched Hindi film releases on the calendar. The partnership is expected to give Ramayana the benefit of Dharma’s strong network across multiplex chains and its proven marketing reach.
The film’s international distribution is also in place. Warner Bros. Pictures is set to handle the overseas release of Ramayana: Part 1, giving the project a rare India-plus-global distribution structure for a mythological tentpole. That combination underlines the scale at which the makers intend to launch the film.
Why Ramayana Is Already A High-Stakes Event Film
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The supporting cast includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, and Arun Govil as King Dashrath.
The film is backed by Namit Malhotra, who had earlier written, “Join us as we fulfill our dream of bringing our greatest epic to life with pride and reverence… Part 1 in Diwali 2026 and Part 2 in Diwali 2027 From our entire Ramayana Family.” He also described the vision behind the project in another post, writing, “Ten years of Aspiration. Relentless Conviction to bring the Greatest Epic of all time to the World. An outcome through a collaboration of some of the world’s best to ensure that Ramayana is presented with the greatest amount of Reverence and Respect. Welcome to the Beginning.”
Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to release in cinemas worldwide during Diwali 2026, with the second part planned for Diwali 2027. The music is being composed by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, while DNEG is powering the visual effects. At its core, the film retells the ancient epic through the journey of Rama and Sita, building toward the defining conflict with Ravana.
