Ranbir Kapoor’s journey with Animal has been nothing short of transformative. The film, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, marked a significant shift for Kapoor, who described his role as a transition from “boy to man.”
Despite the film’s monumental success, which made it the highest-grossing Hindi film of his career, Kapoor has recently opened up about the mixed reception it received and the toll it took on him.
Released in December 2023, Animal sparked intense debate and criticism on social media. The film faced backlash for its perceived misogyny and violence, drawing harsh critiques from prominent figures like Javed Akhtar and Swanand Kirkire.
Ranbir Kapoor Says People Are Disappointed With Him, Reveals His Reaction
In a candid interview with entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, Kapoor reflected on the aftermath of the film’s release. He revealed that many in the industry expressed disappointment over his choice to star in the film. Kapoor acknowledged that while the intention was for the film to be purely entertainment, it was often misconstrued.
“Social media played havoc. They need something to talk about, so they really went to town claiming it was a misogynistic film,” Kapoor said.
He explained that such tags can overshadow the hard work put into the film. Despite the movie’s commercial success, Kapoor encountered criticism from both fans and industry peers.
“There are many people I meet who tell me, ‘You shouldn’t have done this film, we are so disappointed in you’. And a lot of people from the film industry said the same thing,” he added.
Kapoor admitted that while he doesn’t agree with the criticism, he chooses not to argue and instead apologises and promises to try harder next time.
“I quietly apologise and say, ‘Sorry I won’t do it next time.’ I don’t really agree with them, but I am in that phase of my life I don’t argue with anyone. If you don’t like my work, I will say I am sorry I will try harder next time,” he said.
Ranbir Kapoor Calls Animal A BOLD Departure From His ‘Good Boy’ Image
Kapoor admitted that Animal was a bold departure from his usual roles. He expressed fear that the film’s adult themes and departure from his “good boy” image might not be well received.
“I was scared that maybe the audience will not accept me,” Kapoor said.
Despite the film’s commercial success, which was evident from its impressive box office numbers, there was a substantial audience that found the film problematic.
He FEELS Animal Was An Important Step In His Career
Looking back, Kapoor sees Animal as a crucial step in his career. “I was stagnating and hitting a saturation point in my career,” he noted.
The film, he believes, was essential for his growth and confidence. “Animal was the correct film at the right time, to take another step up,” he said. Kapoor sees the role as a necessary shift from his previous image, allowing him to evolve as an actor.
