Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar Didn’t Impress Imitiaz Ali On His Recent Re-Watch: ‘Where’s The Screenplay? Every Song Is Messed Up’

Imtiaz Ali criticises his film Rockstar, reflecting on its flaws by questioning the screenplay and stating that every song feels messed up

Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar was a game-changer for the actor. Released in 2011, the film became a massive hit and earned critical acclaim. However, director Imtiaz Ali has recently revealed that his view of the film has changed after watching it again.

He did not hold back in his critique during a conversation with film critic Rajeev Masand at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

Here’s What Imitiaz Ali Said About Rockstar

Ali admitted that while Rockstar had a strong impact at its release, it hasn’t aged well in his eyes. “I saw Rockstar twice in the theatres recently,” he said. “And kept thinking, ‘What the hell is this film?! Where is the screenplay?!’”

He expressed frustration, stating that the film felt more like a collection of musical moments rather than a cohesive narrative. “Every song is messed up,” he added. He noted how they seemed to collide with one another, making the viewing experience disjointed.

Filmmaker On AR Rahman’s Music

The film features music by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, whose contribution Ali credits as a significant part of his creative process.

He explained, “He brings about a perspective or a dimension which did not exist in my mind before.”

Ali described Rahman’s influence as providing a “third dimension” to his films. He feels that Rahman’s music has the power to reshape the narrative, prompting him to make changes based on the sounds he hears during the creative process.

Imtiaz Ali Also Agrees That Essence Of Rockstar Remains Unchanged

Despite his criticisms, Ali acknowledged that the core of Rockstar remains intact. He pointed out the storyline, which follows a young man who aims to become a star by breaking his heart and pursuing a woman. “The story is fine,” he said.

However, he added that it is the music that really carries the film. He highlighted memorable moments like the build-up to the song “Nadaan Parinde” and the impactful use of drums in emotional scenes.

Rockstar also features performances from Nargis Fakhri, Aditi Rao Hydari, Kumud Mishra, and Piyush Mishra.
