83, starring Ranveer Singh, was supposed to hit theatres in April 2020, but the makers have now waited for two lockdowns and 15 months so the film gets a theatrical release. In the meanwhile, numerous big-budget films have opted for a digital debut as a safety net. Given the potential of Kabir Khan’s film, which tells the story of India’s win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, top OTT platforms are fighting for its premiere rights.
“The makers have got many lucrative offers from streaming giants, but they have stuck to their guns, believing that the movie deserves to play out on the big screen. The sports drama will not only be released in five languages, but will also have a 3D version,” a trade source informed.
The latest news that’s surrounding the internet also suggests that the makers are eyeing for a December release for the film.
“The team is still figuring out the date, depending on the situation across the country and the reopening of theatres,” the source adds.
Producer Vishnu Vardhan Induri assures that an OTT release is not in the cards. He says, “83 is made for [community viewing] like how people watch a cricket match. We have never entertained any conversation with OTT platforms regarding its premiere.”
