Rohit Shetty is riding high on the success of Singham Again, his latest film into the Cop Universe. Following the return of the iconic Singham, the film introduced a fresh character, Lady Singham, played by Deepika Padukone.
Ever since her powerful debut, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a standalone film focused on her character. Now, Shetty has finally confirmed that a separate movie is indeed in the works.
Rohit Shetty Confirms A Female-Led Cop Film For Deepika Padukone
During his conversation with News18, Shetty explained that the wait to develop a standalone film for Deepika’s character was about getting the right story and a solid launch for Lady Singham.
He revealed, “The wait was to get the right script and the right kind of launch for the character. Till 2018, I wasn’t even sure if there was going to be a cop universe.”
While the concept for a female-led cop film is clear in Shetty’s mind, he admits that there’s still a lot of work to be done before the project takes off.
“We still have to write it. We do have a concept in mind, but we don’t know where we can go with it. There’s still time for that. I know what the character will be like and her basic story arc, but I don’t know her whole journey yet as a director or writer. But a female-led cop film headlined by Lady Singham will definitely happen; otherwise, we wouldn’t have introduced her at all. There’s a reason why we’ve emphasised that character and her name in Singham Again,” he said.
Singham Again Was Supposed To Release In 2020
Shetty also opened up about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on his ambitious Cop Universe. “What happened was that we lost two years in Covid. Sooryavanshi was supposed to release in March 2019. We were very happy because the trailer was well-received and we knew it was going to go places. But then suddenly, the film was in cans for two years and everything got delayed because of that. According to our original line-up, Singham Again was also supposed to release in 2020,” he shared.
About Singham Again
Singham Again, which hit theatres this Diwali, stars Ajay Devgn as the titular cop. The film also features an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Tiger Shroff, and Arjun Kapoor.
Despite facing stiff competition from Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Singham Again has performed admirably at the box office, proving that the Cop Universe is alive and thriving.
