The death of 18-year-old Anuj Thapan, who was involved in the shooting incident outside Salman Khan‘s Mumbai residence, has caused a lot of public concern. Thapan was arrested by the Mumbai Police in connection with the shooting in April 2024 and was found dead in police custody on May 1.
His death raised serious questions about the police’s handling of the situation, leading to accusations of foul play. However, the Bombay High Court has now stated that there is no evidence to support claims of police wrongdoing.

Thapan was found dead in a police lock-up, where CCTV footage showed him entering a bathroom alone. There was no indication that anyone accompanied him. His death was initially ruled a suicide, but Thapan’s mother, Rita Devi, insisted there was foul play and called for a CBI investigation. She also claimed the police had not filed an FIR immediately after her son’s death, which added to her suspicions.
In a recent hearing, the Bombay High Court dismissed the accusations against the police. Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Prithviraj K. Chavan questioned why the police would want to harm Thapan, especially since he was not the main suspect in the shooting case.
One of the judges asked, “What would the police achieve by killing him? He is not even a shooter, just an 18-year-old boy. What would they gain by taking his life?”

The judges acknowledged the emotional distress of Rita Devi but also pointed out that physical strength does not indicate mental strength. “Physical strength has nothing to do with mental strength. Who knows what circumstances led him to hang himself?,”Justice Chavan said.
He suggested that Thapan could have been struggling with personal issues, such as financial difficulties or legal expenses. “He was poor. He might have been overwhelmed by lawyer’s expenses… He was coming from outside Maharashtra.”
The court also noted that the CCTV footage showed no signs of struggle, which further supported the suicide theory. Justice Mohite-Dere recognised Rita Devi’s grief but emphasised that her lawyer’s role was to explain the situation to her clearly.
Rita Devi has been asked to review the inquiry report and respond next week. The court’s ruling has brought some closure to the matter, although her search for justice is likely to continue. The investigation into the shooting outside Salman Khan’s residence is still ongoing, with authorities working to uncover all the details.
