Few things are more ironic in Bollywood right now than a Salman Khan war drama generating conversation, controversy and curiosity, yet still not reaching theatres. Maatrubhumi has stayed in headlines for months, but the film itself remains stuck at a crucial stage, with certification pending and its release date still out of reach.
That bottleneck defines the latest development around the project. The film has not yet been submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification, and neither the CBFC nor authorities such as the Ministry of Defence and the Army have viewed it. Until that process begins, one of Khan’s most closely watched films cannot move toward a confirmed release.
Why Certification Delays Have Left Maatrubhumi In Limbo
The project first took shape as Battle of Galwan, drawing from the shadow of the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. When the teaser was unveiled in December 2025, it triggered attention well beyond regular film chatter and drew criticism from Chinese state-affiliated media. The response was followed by a clear recalibration of how the film would be presented.
Director Apoorva Lakhia later explained on Instagram that both Battle of Galwan and Maatrubhumi had been registered titles, and that the film was never designed to be only about combat. He wrote that it was about “humanity, empathy, and the silent battles our soldiers fight,” a statement that effectively outlined the makers’ revised approach.
The reworking did not mean the film was rebuilt from scratch. Instead, the team shot additional material in Mumbai, including family scenes and character-focused moments involving the supporting cast. The military backdrop remains central, but the newer cut gives greater space to the personal lives affected by conflict. That shift also helps explain why earlier release talk has given way to a longer wait.
A War Drama Reframed Around Family And Sacrifice
Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Maatrubhumi stars Salman Khan and Chitrangda Singh and has been linked to Salman Khan Films. The story remains rooted in a military setting inspired by the Galwan backdrop, but the revised version places stronger weight on home, loss and the relationships surrounding a soldier’s duty. The updated title, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, signals that broader lens.
Salman Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
The certification hold also gives this film added importance within Salman Khan’s present career phase. After leading disaster Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and below average Tiger 3 in 2023, and returning with another disappointment Sikandar in 2025 under A.R. Murugadoss’ direction, Khan’s next move carries extra attention. Maatrubhumi stands apart from those titles because it leans into a more restrained dramatic space while still carrying the scale expected from a Salman Khan vehicle. That is what keeps the film compelling even in delay. The buzz has not faded, but the next real milestone is procedural rather than promotional. Once the makers complete certification formalities and lock the final version, Maatrubhumi can finally begin its journey from talking point to release.
