The teaser for Meenakshi Sundareshwar, a new romantic comedy starring Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, was released by Karan Johar on Tuesday.
The film appears to be heavily influenced by Tamil culture. It introduces Meenakshi and Sundareshwar, two characters learning to cope to (long-distance) married life. ‘The film encapsulates the various interlinked aspects of relationships, joint families, the awkwardness in a new marriage and everything in between,’ according to the official logline.
Sanya previously appeared in two Netflix films in a row – Pagglait and Ludo – and before that, in Amazon Prime Video’s Shakuntala Devi, which starred Vidya Balan in the lead role. Abhimanyu Dassani, the son of actor Bhagyashree, made his feature debut in director Vasan Bala’s Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota and will also star alongside Shirley Setia and Shilpa Shetty in Nikamma.
Guilty, Ajeeb Daastaans, Searching for Sheela, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, and the upcoming Finding Anamika were all produced by Dharmatic through its Netflix contract. However, the Economic Times reported last month that the exclusive partnership was unexpectedly terminated after only two years, citing insiders who said that the streamer’s ‘intervention’ was to blame. Dharma Productions announced a new partnership with Viacom18 a day later.
Vivek Soni directed Meenakshi Sundareshwar, which he co-wrote with Aarsh Vora. On November 5, the film will be available to stream on Netflix.
