Shah Rukh Khan Begins Shooting for King, the Next Big Bollywood Spectacle
After more than a year of behind-the-scenes work, drafts, and all the reshuffling, Shah Rukh Khan and director Siddharth Anand have officially begun shooting King, an action-packed revenge saga that is a labour of love for both. The shoot began today, on May 21st, at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai. This is SRK’s first true return to the screen since last year’s record-breaking films Jawan and Dunki.

King has been described as an out-and-out Siddharth Anand huge-screen spectacle that is guaranteed to be stuffed with action, drama, romance, and stunning visuals. Despite being packed with action, at the core the film is a revenge thriller with Shah Rukh Khan playing a gritty assassin out for revenge, together with his daughter, Suhana Khan, who is adapting to a life-changing tragedy as her character.
Deepika Padukone also stars as the leading lady along with Abhishek Bachchan as the antagonist.
An All-Star Ensemble Cast
The all-star cast consists of serious names such as Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Abhay Verma, making it among the most star-studded films in production at the moment.
From Sujoy Ghosh to Siddharth Anand: Development of the Project
Ironically, King was not always the action film. Originally developed with Kahaani director Sujoy Ghosh in charge and Suhana Khan at the forefront, the film was designed for SRK to appear in a guest appearance. After several changes in direction, Siddharth Anand was approached; reshooting the film changed to have SRK be the main feature of King.
There have been multiple revisions to the writer even before Anand took over, as now the script has re-aligned with Anand’s filmmaking sensibility to adequately represent the experience intended for a big screen. King will shoot both internationally and across both India and Europe as a world-scale production under Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Production.
A Gandhi Jayanti Release: Setting Up Another SRK Blockbuster
As per trade analysts, October 2, 2026, could be the ideal setup for a film like King.
“A Thusday release on a national holiday affords it a three-day lead. Considering the star power of SRK and the film’s mass appeal, it is primed for a potential 500-crore run,” said a top industry source.
The Gandhi Jayanti weekend fits nicely into an already crowded 2026 release timeline:
- Republic Day – Border 2 (Sunny Deol)
- Eid – Toxic (Yash) vs Dhamaal 4 (Ajay Devgn)
- Independence Day – Naagzilla (Kartik Aaryan) vs Bhediya 2 (Varun Dhawan)
- Diwali – Ramayana Part 1 (Ranbir Kapoor)
- Christmas – Mahavatar (Vicky Kaushal) — which may shift and possibly allow space for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War
If King takes the Gandhi Jayanti slot, it could be the largest non-festival film of 2026 — and a high-stakes return for SRK after a year off.

With the star power of Shah Rukh Khan, the action expertise of Siddharth Anand, and a holiday release, King is shaping up to be one of the most commercially viable Bollywood releases of 2026. Assuming all goes well, the revenge-action entertainer is projected to be a BLOCKBUSTER. There is a tremendous amount of noise around this release, and if the content clicks, King could turn out to be Shah Rukh Khan’s next all-time grosser after Jawan.
