Honey Singh, the rapper credited with introducing Punjabi rap to Bollywood, disclosed in an interview to Curly Tales that Shah Rukh Khan, the superstar, initially disapproved of his now-popular song “Chaar Botal Vodka.” Honey Singh recounted how he conceived the song during a drinking session with a choreographer and a dancer, and how the trio composed it in one night. When he played the song for Shah Rukh Khan, the actor dismissed it as lacking potential. The next day, however, Honey Singh made sure to have the actor listen to the finished product.
Honey Singh stated, “I made Shah Rukh bhai listen to it. Agli subha, maine kaha, ‘Bhai, raat ko gaana banaya hai, suno (I made a song last night, and I want you to listen to it)’. He said, ‘Bakwaas gaana hai, yeh chalega nahi (This is a rubbish song, it won’t work)’. I said this is going to work and it went massive.“
Despite Shah Rukh Khan’s unfavorable feedback on “Chaar Botal Vodka,” the singer-rapper did not take it to heart. In fact, the two went on to collaborate on “Lungi Dance” for the movie Chennai Express, which was yet another song initially disliked by the actor.
“Shah Rukh Khan called me after listening to ‘Angrezi Beat’ and asked me to make a similar song. I said ‘No, tell me what is the vibe of your film’. He narrated his film for 3 hours. I told him I will create something for him and will come back only if the song will be a super hit. I made ‘Lungi Dance’ and he didn’t like it. I told him, ‘Chahiye toh theek hai, nahi chahiye toh main isko single release kar dunga (Take if you want to, else I will release it as a single). This will work,” he told Raj Shamani.
“Lungi Dance” went on to become a blockbuster hit, contributing significantly to the film’s success.
