Shah Rukh Khan Says Being King Is Responsibility As King Gears Up for December 2026 Release

Shah Rukh Khan has spent three decades wearing the industry’s most persistent nickname like a second skin, but he is not interested in treating it like a throne. As his next theatrical feature King locks in a December 2026 release, the superstar is also stepping into Disney’s orbit again, this time as the narrator of a new The Lion King themed fireworks spectacular at sea.

In a recent email interview with PTI, Khan addressed the King tag with the kind of clarity that only comes when you have outlived the hype cycle. “The word ‘king‘ has never meant power to me. It has always been about responsibility, to the people who believe in you and the stories you choose to tell,” he said. He added that at this stage, the title feels “less like an identity and more like a reminder to live with heart, humility, and purpose.”

That timing is hard to miss. Khan is returning to the big screen after his mammoth 2023 run with Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki, and King is being framed as the next carefully chosen step, not just another marquee announcement.

The Latest Update: SRK Narrates Disney Cruise Line’s New Lion King Show

Khan will narrate “The Lion King Celebration in the Sky,” an onboard fireworks and music spectacle debuting on Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, Disney Adventure, during its maiden voyage from Singapore on March 10, 2026. The show is billed as a music-driven story unfolding above the ship with pyrotechnics and immersive lighting, backed by franchise staples including “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” “He Lives in You,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”

Calling it a “full-circle moment,” Khan told PTI that returning to the world of The Lion King feels like “coming home,” and said he is excited that more families across Asia will get to celebrate the classic tale “in a brand-new way.”

Shah Rukh Khan’s Recent and Upcoming Work

Khan’s most recent theatrical releases remain the 2023 trio that reset the modern Hindi box office. Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan (2023) roared to a worldwide gross of Rs 1,050.30 crore, while Atlee’s Jawan (2023) went even bigger at Rs 1,148.32 crore worldwide, cementing his action-era dominance. He closed the year with Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki (2023), which grossed around Rs 470.6 crore worldwide and later began streaming on Netflix.

On the upcoming slate, King is officially set for a theatrical release on December 24, 2026. Directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures, the film brings Khan on screen with daughter Suhana Khan, alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan, making it one of the most closely watched Hindi releases on the calendar.
