Ever Imagined Baazigar without Kajol? Well, the music composer duo Nadeem-Shravan actually wanted her out of Abbas-Mustan’s 1993 hit romantic thriller. The director made a shocking revelation during an interview with Radio Nasha. They revealed that Nadeem-Shravan even decided to walk out because she wasn’t dropped from the film.
Abbas-Mustan, known for their iconic thrillers, initially approached Nadeem-Shravan to compose music for Baazigar after their successful collaboration on the 1990 romantic musical Aashiqui. However, a condition emerged when Nadeem-Shravan demanded the replacement of Kajol due to personal issues with her and her mother, Tanuja.
Here’s What Director Mustan Said About Kajol-SRK’s Baazigar
“Nadeem-Shravan had some personal issue with Kajol and Tanuja ji (Kajol’s mother). They asked us if we can change the female lead and we refused coz we had already committed to her. We had finalised Kajol and she had also signed the contract. We refused to make any changes. Picture banege toh Kajol toh rahege he (If the film will be made, Kajol will star in it). They responded to this by saying – Toh hum nahi rahenge (Then we will not do the film),” recalled Mustan.
The issue stemmed from a visit to Kajol’s residence after the success of her debut film, Bekhudi (1992), for which Nadeem-Shravan provided the music. Allegedly, they were deterred by Tanuja’s behaviour, leading them to vow never to collaborate with Kajol again.
Anu Malik Was Brought Onboard For Baazigar After Nadeem-Shravan’s Exit
Subsequently, Abbas-Mustan enlisted Anu Malik as the music composer for Baazigar, resulting in chart-topping hits such as “Ye Kaali Kaali Aankhen”, “Kitaben Bahut Si”, “Ae Mere Humsafar”, and the title track, “Baazigar O Baazigar”. Alongside Kajol, the film starred Shah Rukh Khan, marking a significant milestone in both their careers, and introduced Shilpa Shetty in her debut role, alongside Dilip Tahil and Johnny Lever.
Nadeem-Shravan enjoyed immense popularity in the 1990s before parting ways in 2005. Sadly, Shravan succumbed to Covid-19 in 2021. Meanwhile, Kajol is preparing for her next project, Do Patti. As Baazigar celebrates its 30th anniversary, the film recently returned to cinemas, reaffirming its status as a timeless classic.
