A coal belt saga, a filmmaker known for brooding crime worlds, and an actor steadily chasing riskier material, Kaala already sounds like a potent mix. Siddhant Chaturvedi is set to headline the period crime series, reuniting with Excel Entertainment while teaming up with Abhishek Chaubey for a project that promises scale, atmosphere and a darker dramatic register.
Kaala Brings Siddhant Chaturvedi Into A Period Crime World
The new series is tentatively titled Kaala and is being developed as a period drama rooted in the coal mafia of Jharkhand. The story begins in the 1960s and stretches across multiple decades, giving Chaubey a broad historical canvas for a crime narrative shaped by power, violence and shifting social realities.
That setting signals an ambitious turn for the project. Chaubey has long been drawn to morally complex worlds in films like Ishqiya and Udta Punjab, and Kaala appears to continue that instinct through a sweeping, era-spanning story.
Abhishek Chaubey Returns After Killer Soup
The series will mark Chaubey’s next directorial venture after Killer Soup, the Netflix crime drama that premiered on January 11, 2024. Led by Manoj Bajpayee and Konkona Sensharma, the show pushed his storytelling into a more eccentric darkly comic space while retaining his fascination with crime and damaged characters.
Kaala has been in pre-production for months and is expected to go on floors after Diwali, with the first schedule planned in Pune. Excel Entertainment is backing the series, adding another high-profile title to its streaming slate.
Siddhant Chaturvedi’s Long Excel Connection
With Kaala, Chaturvedi adds another Excel title to a creative association that has shaped much of his on-screen rise. His journey with the banner began with Inside Edge and deepened with Gully Boy, the 2019 breakout that made MC Sher a pop culture favourite.
He later continued that run with Phone Bhoot in 2022, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan in 2023 and Yudhra in 2024, moving across comedy, urban drama and action while staying closely linked to the company.
Siddhant Chaturvedi’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Chaturvedi’s most recent release was Yudhra in 2024, an action drama that positioned him in a more aggressive leading-man space after the more introspective Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, which premiered on Netflix in 2023. That contrast has become a defining feature of his slate as he moves between mainstream and character-driven material.
He is also attached to Do Deewane Seher Mein, a confirmed 2026 theatrical release. In that context, Kaala stands out as a significant pivot, placing him in a period crime world under a director with a strong authorial voice, and potentially giving his next phase a sharper dramatic edge.
