Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Heads To SonyLIV, Nearly A Year After The Actor Swore Off OTT

Aamir Khan is officially back in the mainstream streaming ecosystem, and it is happening with the very film he once positioned as a pushback against the usual OTT pipeline. Nearly a year after its theatrical release, Sitaare Zameen Par is set to stream on SonyLIV, a move that instantly reignites conversations around release windows, creative control, and whether India’s biggest stars can truly rewrite the rules of distribution for long.

The SonyLIV announcement also lands as a notable win for the platform, which called the acquisition a milestone and described the title as its first Hindi theatrical film to premiere on the service. The exact streaming date has not been announced yet, but the platform has confirmed the film is “released soon.”

Latest Update: Sonyliv Confirms Sitaare Zameen Par Streaming Premiere

Directed by R S Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par released in theatres on June 20, 2025. After publicly resisting conventional streaming deals around the film’s release, Khan pivoted to a transactional model and premiered the film on YouTube on August 1, 2025, where viewers could rent it for Rs 100 per watch.

That decision was framed by Khan as a direct challenge to what he described as a “faulty” eight week theatrical window, arguing that it had “cannibalised” the movie business. He positioned the YouTube strategy as a “private cinema” model that required a one time payment rather than being bundled into a subscription.

Now, with SonyLIV entering the picture, Sitaare Zameen Par completes a rare three stage rollout across theatrical, TVOD, and SVOD.

The film is an official remake of the Spanish hit Champions (Campeones). Khan plays Gulshan Arora, a basketball coach who lands in court after a drunk driving incident and is ordered to coach a team of neurodivergent players as community service. Genelia Deshmukh stars alongside him, with an ensemble featuring Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai and Naman Misra.

Aamir Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Khan was last seen as a lead actor in Laal Singh Chaddha (2022), and he also made a cameo appearance in Salaam Venky (2022). In recent years, he has leaned heavily into production, backing Laapataa Ladies (2024) under Aamir Khan Productions.

On the release front, Sitaare Zameen Par (2025) marked his return to a full fledged starring vehicle, and it is now headed to SonyLIV for its subscription streaming run. Looking ahead, Aamir Khan Productions has Lahore 1947 lined up for a theatrical release on August 13, 2026. The period drama is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and stars Sunny Deol, with Shabana Azmi and Preity Zinta also on the cast list.
