Sonu Nigam, one of the most popular singers of the 90s, has opened up about how his career took a major turn after he sang the song ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ for Shah Rukh Khan in the movie ‘Pardes’. The singer said that before that song, he was only offered sad songs and was considered as a clone of Mohammad Rafi.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Sonu Nigam said that he had a huge hit with the song ‘Achha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyaar Ka’ from the 1995 film ‘Bewafa Sanam’, but it also typecast him as a singer of sad songs. He joked that he would only get songs with words like ‘kafan, dafan, laash, shamshaan ghat, kabristan’. He said that he wanted to sing some upbeat songs as well, and that opportunity came with Nadeem-Shravan.
“I was fed up! After ‘Achha Sila Diya’, I was only offered sad songs. I always joke on stage that I started getting songs with the words, ‘kafan, dafan, laash, shamshaan ghat, kabristan’. I would only get such sad songs! I wished that I would get some up-tempo songs as well, and that finally happened with Nadeem-Sharavan,” Sonu said.
The singer recalled how the music composer duo suggested his name to filmmaker Subhash Ghai for the song ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ in the 1997 film ‘Pardes’. He said that he sang the song exactly how Ghai wanted it, and it became a superhit.
Sonu revealed that his career took a turn when he sang ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ in Pardes for Shah Rukh Khan. “I had told them I can do it. I can do Western also. When they had an opportunity with ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’, they suggested Subhash Ghai my name. So, I started getting new age songs thanks to Nadeem-Sharavan,” he added.

Sonu Nigam on the adlib he did ‘Ah’ for song
He also recalled the adlib he did for the song ‘Ah’ which was him copying Michael Jackson. “The ‘ah’ in the song, that was me copying Michael Jackson’s style. I wouldn’t understand what he would sing except for his ‘ahs’ in the songs. So, during ‘Yeh Dil’, I thought it could go perfectly well here. Subhash ji really liked it and said, ‘Yeh toh bada badmaash ladka hai!’ He liked that I was singing with so much power,” he added.
