Special Feature: Fake Hype: The Secret Behind Critics Praising Movies To Create Artificial Buzz Ahead of Film Releases That Later Turn Out to Be EPIC Disasters

Fake hype often surrounds big Bollywood films, but many, like Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Adipurush, and Cirkus disappoint. Why do some media continue to praise these doomed movies? Let's uncover the secrets behind this phenomenon.

In Bollywood, it’s common for big films and their trailers to get loads of praise from some journalists and media folks before hitting theatres. But, here’s the twist: many of these hyped-up movies end up flopping big time, like Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Prabhas’ Adipurush and Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus.

So, why do some sections of the media keep praising these movies, aware or unaware that these films are heading for disaster? Let’s uncover the secrets behind why some media hype up movies that are bound to be epic failures before they even hit the screens.

Manipulative Marketing Tactics: Films often employ manipulative marketing strategies to generate artificial buzz before their release. This includes hyping up the film through paid reviews, misleading quotes and posts, and exaggerated promotional campaigns.

Critics’ Influence: Critics play a significant role in shaping public opinion about a film. However, some movies receive praise from critics due to ulterior motives such as personal connections, financial incentives, or pressure from production houses, leading to inflated ratings and false expectations. Showing trailer a day before to bunch of cinema illiterates harm the film more.

False Expectations and Letdowns: When trailers of mediocre quality receive exaggerated praise, it sets the stage for audience disappointment. The glaring contrast between the heightened anticipation and the actual content often sparks a negative reaction towards both the film itself and the media platforms that hyped it.

Interconnected Networks: The film industry and media share a mutually beneficial relationship. Media outlets seek exclusive material to engage their audience, while filmmakers rely on positive coverage to generate excitement. However, this interdependence can sometimes result in overly positive reviews of trailers, contributing to the artificial buzz surrounding certain films.

Influence and Privileges: Journalists may offer favourable feedback to maintain their access to exclusive events, interviews, and screenings. Criticizing a trailer could jeopardize these privileges and their status within the industry network, creating a conflict of interest that shapes their coverage.

Trips To Overseas Exotic Locations: Journalists were flown down to exotic locations in order to get artificial hype around the film. These journalists went berserk in promoting the film and termed it as next blockbuster. But then film turned out to be mega disaster and now these journalists running for cover shamelessly. They need short course in cinema – “how to gauge trailer and remain objective“!

BMCM Is the Next Over-Hyped Failure

The recent release of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, faced a disastrous opening at the box office. Despite the immense hype surrounding its release, including promotional materials like posters, teasers, and trailers, as well as glowing reviews from several critics hailing it as the best film of 2024, the film failed to live up to expectations.

On its opening day, theatres reported low attendance, revealing a stark contrast between the anticipation and the actual reception of the movie. Many viewers expressed disappointment, attributing the film’s lacklustre performance to a corporate scam that artificially inflated booking numbers.

Like similar films in the past, the future of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan appears bleak, and only time will tell how big disaster it will become.
